Q&A
with Laura Kemp
Hi
Laura, I am so glad to have you on my blog today. Your new book ‘The Late
Blossoming of Frankie Green’ is an amazing read with such a gorgeous cover. I
really loving the bright colours!
Oh, thanks so
much for having me! Lovely to hear you enjoyed the book - it’s always scary
wondering how it will be received. The cover was designed by the awesome Debbie
Clement who I think captures the journey of Frankie Green.
How
did you come up with the idea for ‘The Late Blossoming of Frankie Green’?
My amazing
agent Lizzy Kremer put it to me: what if someone had read Fifty Shades of Grey
and wanted to embark on an adult education? So I created Frankie, our lovely
romantic heroine, who accidentally falls into bed with the brilliant Floyd to
teach her the ropes. She resorts to it to win back her husband, who asks for
some space when he tells her life is too predictable. But things don’t quite go
to plan!
Are
you working on any new ideas at the moment?
My next book,
which is done, is with my publisher Aria for an edit. There’ll be countless
edits as there always are! Fingers crossed, it’ll be out next year. I’ve just
started working on book five, dreaming up new characters, which is brilliant
fun!
What
is your favourite genre to read?
I have three
favourites - sorry! Psychological thrillers for the twisty-turns bits, rom coms
and chick lit for the laughs and that comforting feeling that basically we all
go through the same emotions and books set in far flung places for escapism.
What
is your typical writing day?
It starts at
9.15am with a coffee and I go through until 1-ish, writing and researching
(with Twitter, food and more coffee breaks). Then after that I reflect on what
I’ve done as I go about with the rest of my life, looking after my son, doing
the washing, walking the dog and shouting at my husband! If I’m on a deadline,
I’ll get going whenever I wake up - which can be as early as 4am. It’s a time
when it has to be done and if no one else is up then I can crack on.
Do
you have a favourite book or author to read?
Loads!
Milly Johnson, Lucy Diamond, Mhairi Mcfarlane, Clare Mackintosh, the list goes
on! In terms of my favourite book, I think I’d say Wuthering Heights because it
was a game-changer aged sixteen when i did it at A Level. The drama,
characters, setting and story-telling left me gob-smacked.
If
you had to describe your writing in three words, what would they be?
Funny,
touching and sweet. I hope!
Thank
you so much for being on 23 Review Street! No, thank you!
Book bloggers do such an amazing job - you rock xxx
